Fields Leads Lady Panthers Past Virginia State

Orangeburg, S.C. - Ashley Fields scored a game-high 17 points in leading three  Lady Panthers in double-figures as Claflin University rolled past Virginia State University, 59-33, in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) game at the Tullis Arena on Wednesday (Jan. 16).
 
In winning its third straight game, Claflin is now 10-8 overall and 7-4 in the CIAA, including a 4-2 record in the Southern Division.
 
Fields, who scored in double digits for the ninth time in the Lady Panthers last 10 games, was 6-of-13 from the field.
 
Deja Dickens followed Fields in scoring for Claflin with 13 points, along with four steals and three assists. Dickens also connected on four three-pointers, giving her 41 for the season.
 
Dashia Jackson added 12 points and six assists for the Lady Panthers, while Onyeka Monyei pulled down 10 rebounds.
 
Virginia State, 8-7 and 2-4 in the CIAA, was led by Ebony Reynolds with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
For the game, the Lady Panthers turned out their best defensive outing of the season, holding the Trojans to a season low 33 points.
 
The previous defensive low for Claflin was 45 points by Paine College and Elizabeth City State University.
 
Claflin forced 22 Trojan turnovers in the game that produced 23 points in holding Virginia State to 27.3 percent (12-of-44) from the floor.
 
In the contest, the Lady Panthers implemented a full-court pressure defense to start the game. The defensive move produced a 12-0 lead for Claflin and held the Trojan scoreless until the 1:21 mark of the quarter.
 
Tajah Clark ended the Lady Panthers scoring run with a layup.
 
The Lady Panthers used a pair of three-pointers and connected two three-point scoring plays in taking the  12-0 lead with 4:09 on the clock. Claflin finished the quarter with a 13-4 advantage.
 
The Claflin defense held the Trojans to 16.7 percent (2-of-12) from the field in the quarter.
 
In the second quarter, the Lady Panthers offense continued to put points on the scoreboard, outscoring the Trojans 19-7.  Dickens three-point basket with 2:20 showing on the clock, provided Claflin its largest lead of the half at 29-7.
 
The Lady Panthers led 32-11 at the intermission, thanks to a three-pointer from Fields with 34 seconds left on the clock.
 
In the second half, the Lady Panthers outscored Virginia State 27-22.
 
Claflin biggest lead of the game came with 1:13 left at 59-33.
 
The Lady Panthers will take to the road for four straight games, starting with Livingstone College on (Jan. 19) followed by Fayetteville State University (Jan. 21), Johnson C. Smith (Jan. 28) and Benedict College (Jan. 31).
