Claflin Falls to Fayetteville State in CIAA Southern Division Contest

Fayetteville, N.C. – Despite a game-high 22 points from Dashia Jackson, the Lady Panthers of Claflin University fell to Fayetteville State University, 73-56, in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division women's game on Monday (Jan. 21).
 
The road loss ended Claflin four-game winning streak, dropping the Lady Panthers to 11-9 overall and 8-5 in the CIAA, including a 4-3 record in the division.
 
Jackson, who scored over 20 points for the fourth time this season, was 6-of-12 from the floor that included five three-pointers, giving her 39. She had 12 of the Lady Panthers 26 points in the first half.
 
Jackson has scored in double-figures the last six games for Claflin, averaging 16.3 points over that span.
 
Deja Dickens was the only player other in double-digits for the Lady Panthers with 10 points that included a pair of three-pointers.
 
Shakarri Mack added nine points for Claflin, while Dionna Long dished out four assists and pulled down six rebounds.
 
Fayetteville State, which halted a three-game losing streak, improved to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in the CIAA and 1-1 in the division.
 
Shantel Bennett led the Broncos with 19 points followed by Katisha Hyman at 16 points.
 
In the contest, the Lady Panthers couldn't shake a cold shooting performance in the first quarter. In the quarter, Claflin shot just 8.3 percent (1-for-12), while Fayetteville State hit a sizzling 62.5 percent (10-of-16).
 
The Lady Panthers finished the game shooting 30.9 percent (17-of-55) compared to 52.6 (30-of-57) for Fayetteville State.
 
The Broncos scored the game's first five points followed by an 8-1 run to take a commanding 13-1 lead at 5:07 mark.
 
The Lady Panthers did manage to score nine points over the final five minutes of the quarter, including six free throws and a three-point basket from Jackson.
 
Claflin trailed 26-10 at the end of the quarter.
 
The other three quarters was relatively close as Fayetteville State outscored the Lady Panthers 47-46.  The Broncos won the scoring battle in the second and third quarters by an 18-16 and 16-14 margin, respectively.
 
Claflin was able to outscore Fayetteville State in the fourth quarter at 16-13, but the Lady Panthers could not get closer than 17 points on three separates occasions.
 
Claflin shot the ball well at the free throw, connecting on 15-of-19 (78.9%) to Fayetteville State 6-of-8 (75%).
 
The Lady Panthers will take a week break before traveling to Johnson C. Smith University on Jan. 28 for another CIAA Southern Division.
