Claflin Lady Panthers Fall to Johnson C. Smith in CIAA Women's Basketball Action

Charlotte, N.C. – Johnson C. Smith University outscored Claflin University 48-18 over a two-quarter span in defeating the Lady Panthers, 79-43, in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest on Monday (Jan. 28).
 
The road loss dropped Claflin to 11-10 overall and 8-6 in the CIAA, including 4-4 in the division.
 
Ashley Fields led the Lady Panthers with her 17th game in double-figures with 13 points. Fields has missed only four games in double-digits this season.
 
Dashia Jackson, Dionna Long and Shakarri Mack all added seven points for Claflin in the loss.
 
Johnson C. Smith, now 10-10 and 7-3 in the CIAA including a 3-1 divisional record, was led by Jakeyah McNeil with a game-high 15 points.  Malia Rivers dropped in 11 points.
 
After a close first quarter, which saw Johnson C. Smith hold a slim 17-15 lead, the Golden Bulls exploded for 48 points over the next two quarters, in building a 65-33 lead after three complete.
 
The Lady Panthers managed just 18 points over quarters two and three.
 
The Offensive output for Johnson C. Smith started in the second quarter as the Golden Bulldogs outscored Claflin 29-9 en route to a 46-24 halftime lead.
 
In the quarter, Johnson C. Smith held its largest lead of the first half, 10 (40-20) with 3:18 on the clock. The Golden Bulls used a 23-5 run in building the 20 point lead.
 
The third quarter saw Johnson C. Smith rack up 19 points to nine for Claflin, pushing its lead to 65-33.
Claflin did manage to hold the Johnson C. Smith offensive unit to 14 points in the fourth quarter, while scoring 10 points.
 
For the game, the Lady Panthers shot 24.6 percent (15-of-61) from the floor compared to 41.2 percent (28-of-68) for Johnson C. Smith.
 
The Golden Bulls did much better from three-point range, connecting on 9-of-15 (56.3%), while Claflin was just 1-of-16 (6.3%).
 
Both teams committed 18 turnovers, but Johnson C. Smith turned the Lady Panthers miscues into 20 points.
 
The Lady Panthers will wrap up their four-game road swing on Thursday (Jan. 31) at rival Benedict College. Action for the non-conference match gets underway at 5:30 p.m. inside the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena on the Benedict Campus.
