Claflin Come From Behind to Defeat Benedict on the Road

Columbia, SC—  After falling behind by early, the Claflin University women's team battled back to take a 70-60 win over the Benedict in a non-conference game in Columbia.
 
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Lady Panthers who improved to 12-10 overall.
 
The Lady Tigers, who is ranked sixth in the most recent D2SIDA South Region Poll, saw its eight-game win streak halted in falling to 16-5 on the season.
 
Ashley Fields, Claflin leading scorer and rebounder, recorded her sixth double-double of the season in leading the Lady Panthers with 20 points and 13 rebounds.  Fields also had six steals and two assists in the win.
 
Claflin had four players to finish in double-figures as Shakarri Mack dropped in 16 and Dashia Jackson and Deja Dickens scored 12 each.
 
Benedict was led by Ay'Anna Bey who also recorded a double-double, 16 points-17 rebounds.
 
Ayanna Armstead had 13 points with eight rebounds while Jasmine Gholson and Essence Barnes-Jordan contributed 12 and 10, respectively.
 
After being down by two heading into the half, Claflin came out very aggressive and clamped down on defense in the third quarter.
 
The Lady Panthers used a 10-1 run over the first seven-plus minutes to cut the half-time lead to one, 38-36, with 2:36 remaining in the third.
 
After Benedict pushed its lead back to three, 41-38, Jackson hit two free-throws to close the gap back to one, 40-41.  The Lady Panthers scored the next three-of-four points which was culminated by a driving layup by Mack with 1:14 left to tie the game at 42-all.
 
The Lady Tigers scored the final three points of the quarter to take a slim three-point lead, 45-42, into the final stanza.
 
Benedict scored the first point the fourth quarter but Claflin offense remained in control, scoring the next 10-of-11 points to take a 50-48 lead for good with 7:31 remaining in the game. 
 
Claflin took its largest lead of the game, 13 (70-57) off a free-throw by Dickens with 50 seconds remaining before going on to take the 70-60 victory.
 
Benedict took the early 10-2 advantage to start the game but Claflin get pressing, Fields scored six straight points to help the Lady Panthers close the gap to two, 10-8.
 
The Lady Tigers scored next four points but Claflin closed the quarter with four straight points behind the shooting of Fields to keep the gap at two after one, 12-10.
 
Benedict opened the second stanza with a 5-0 run to push the lead to 19-12.
 
Jackson connected on two free-throws at the 7:56 mark to end the run and Shakarri Mack hit a layup to pull Claflin within one, 19-18.
 
Barnes-Jordan hit a three-pointer to stop Claflin 6-0 run and push the Lady Tigers led to four, 22-18.
 
A three-pointer by Deja Dickens followed by a layup by Jackson gave Claflin its first lead, 23-22, with 4:14 showing on the clock.
 
A jumper by Barnes-Jordan at the 3:53 mark sparked a 15-2 run to close the half.
 
The Lady Tigers led 37-25 at intermission.
 
Claflin will host Fayetteville State, Monday, Feb. 4 in the first-of-five home games to close the regular season.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.  It will be First Responders Night in Tullis Arena.  Members of the police and fire department as well as EMS, nurses and doctors in uniform or with a valid ID will be receive a general admission doubleheader ticket for $5.  Regular general admission is $8.
