Lady Panthers Fall to Shaw in CIAA Volleyball Match

Orangeburg, S.C. – Shaw University defeated Claflin University 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-9) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division volleyball match on Wednesday at the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Wellness Center (Tullis Arena).
 
With the loss, Claflin dropped to 4-9 overall and 3-5 in the CIAA.
 
The win by Shaw evened the Lady Bears season record at 8-8 overall and 8-1 against CIAA teams.
 
In the first set, the Lady Bears jumped out to a 12-4 advantage and increased that margin to 22-9. Shaw secured the set win by scoring three of the last seven points for a 25-13 victory.
 
The second set saw Shaw score 10 of the first 12 points for a 10-2 lead. Claflin rallied to score the next three points to trail 10-5. The Lady Panthers could get no closer as the Lady Bears finished the set outscoring the home team 15-12 for the 25-17 win.
 
Shaw won the third set by 16 points at 25-9.
 
For the match, Shaw collected 42 kills to 13 for Claflin. The Lady Bears narrowly edged the Lady Panthers in the dig department by a 50-46 margin.
 
Claflin was led by Jada Roberts with four kills, with Léah Wellington dishing out six assists and Trinity Fierce finishing with 11 digs.
 
Jailynn Butler and Tyler Hunter had 10 kills each to lead Shaw, while Jada Flowers contributed 32 assists and Karla Sosa added 16 digs.
 
The Lady Panthers will return to action this weekend in the second CIAA Round-up at Winston-Salem State University. Claflin will face three teams from the northern division of the conference, beginning Saturday (Oct. 19) with Virginia State University at 12 noon.  On Sunday (Oct. 20), Claflin will face Lincoln University (PA) at 11 a.m., followed by Virginia Union University at 1 pm.
