Claflin Goes 1-2 in the Second CIAA Round-Up

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Claflin University volleyball team went 1-2 in the second Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-Up held Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 19-20, in Whitaker Gymnasium on the campus of the Winston-Salem State University.
 
After the three matches, Claflin record goes to 5-11 overall and 4-7 in the CIAA
 
In its opening match on Saturday (Oct. 19), Claflin fell to Virginia State University (VSU) 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-19).  For the match, VSU outhit Claflin 50 kills to 27 and recorded nine more digs than the Lady Panthers.
 
Taylor Drayton led Claflin offensively with nine kills.  Jala Roberts put down six while Paris Heathman added three.  Erin Preston put up 10 set assists with Trinity Fierce leading the team defensively, picking up seven digs for Claflin in the loss.
 
VSU was led by Jailyn Ivey with 17 kills.  Bria Anderson had 41 set assists while Alexis Baker picked up 10 digs for the Trojans in the win.
 
The Lady Panthers opened play on Sunday (Oct. 20) with a 3-0 win over Lincoln University (PA).
 
Claflin controlled the match from the first serve, holding Lincoln to 43 total kills in the match.  The Lady Panthers allowed the Lions to just 15 kills in the first set, 13 in the second and 15 in the third en route to sweeping Lincoln (25-15, 25-13, 25-15).
 
Jala Roberts and Taylor Drayton each recorded double-digit kills for Claflin, putting down 12 and 10, respectively.  Drayton also finished the game with seven digs and five service aces for 15 points, while Roberts added an ace and a dig for 13 points to her stat line.
 
Kaiya Lewis had five kills and Jasmine Lewis put down four to lead Lincoln (PA).   Tymera Crudup put up 11 assists while Mikhi Wright added seven digs for the Lions in the loss.
 
In its final match of the Round-Up the Lady Panthers fell to Virginia Union University, 3-1.
 
Claflin won the opening set of the match 25-23 to take the 1-0 set lead.  Virginia Union rebounded quickly, scoring the first four points of the second set with Claflin managing to pull within two on multiple occasions before falling in set two 25-22.
 
The Lady Panthers appeared to have their offense back on track at the start of set three, going up 6-2 to open the set but Virginia Union remained resilient fighting back to even the game at 7-all.  The teams exchanged sideouts over the next 16 points.  Virginia Union scored the next three points to take an 18-15 advantage and never looked back, set three 25-19, for a 2 set to 1 lead in the match.
 
Virginia Union remained aggressive to start the fourth set. Virginia Union opened the set with a 7-4 lead and would maintain at least a four-point lead midway through the set owning a 13-9 lead.
 
Claflin rattled off three straight points to cut the deficit to one, 13-12, but Virginia Union remained solid, increasing its lead back to four, 20-16, before going on to take the final set by a three-point margin, 25-22.
 
Drayton continued to play solid for the Lady Panthers, finishing with a match-high 16 kills.  Roberts added seven while Léah Wellington put up 16 set assists.
 
The Lady Panthers had four players to finish the game with double-digit digs. Wellington, Drayton and Briana Reed each picked up 13 while Jada Jones had 11 in the loss.
 
Virginia Union was led by Essence Poteat and Kamryn Young, who put down 15 and 11 kills respectively.
 
Claflin will return home for two matches next week, Converse College (Oct. 22) for Community Day and Livingstone (Oct. 26)
