Claflin Defeats Bowie State 3-1 in It’s Opening Match of the CIAA Volleyball Roundup

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University volleyball team defeated Bowie State University, 3-1 (25-12, 15-25, 25-12, 25-20), on Saturday (Oct. 5) in its opening match of the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Roundup held at Claflin in the Jonas T. Kennedy Health & Wellness Center's Tullis Arena and Auxiliary Gym.  The victory snapped a two-game conference slide for the Lady Panthers.
 
The Roundup will conclude on Sunday (Oct. 6) with two games at 10:30 a.m. and two games at 1 p.m.
 
Claflin, who improved to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in the CIAA, will host Elizabeth City State University at 1 p.m. in Tullis Arena.
 
Tomorrow's slate of matches also includes Fayetteville State University vs. Bowie State University (10:30 a.m.-Tullis Arena), Livingstone College vs. Elizabeth State University (10:30 a.m.-Auxiliary Court) and Bowie State University vs Livingstone College (1 p.m.-Auxiliary Gym).
 
In its match with Bowie, Claflin put down 39 kills against 29 for Bowie with 78 digs compared to 62 for the Bulldogs.
 
Jala Roberts paced the Lady Panthers once again offensively, finishing with 10 kills.  Léah Wellington and Vianca Cólon Gonzalez put up 13 and 11 set assists, respectively, while Sadaiya Edouard finished with five total blocks (3 solo-2 assists) for the Lady Panthers in the win.  Defensively, Trinity Fierce picked up 13 digs.
 
Bowie State was led by Madison Marshall who finished with 11 kills and 14 digs.  Neysha Washington led the Bulldogs defensively with a match-high 16 digs.
 
After the Roundup, Claflin will hit the road for its next six matches beginning next Wednesday, Oct. 9 when they travel to Salisbury, NC to face Livingstone College in a CIAA southern division match.
