Claflin Sweeps Elizabeth City State on Final Day of 2019 CIAA Volleyball Roundup

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University volleyball team swept Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), 25-20, 25-20, and 25-21, on the final day of the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Roundup #1. The Roundup which was contested over a two-day period, was hosted by the Lady Panthers.
 
The win improves Claflin to 3-6 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA. ECSU dropped to 3-7 overall, 2-3 in the CIAA.
 
Junior Jala Roberts paced the Lady Panthers with a match-high 17 kills (.378 hitting percentage).  Roberts also contributed nine digs in the match.
 
Freshmen Briana Reed and Taylor Drayton also had a solid hitting night, finishing with eight and seven kills, respectively.  Leah Wellington ran an effective offense, putting up a match-high 18 set assists.
 
Defensively, Angel Johnson and Wellington recorded double-digit digs, picking up 12 and 10 respectively.
 
ECSU was led by Kaylee Williams with nine kills and 15 digs.  Jahera Dangerfield also had double-digit digs picking up 11 for the Vikings in the loss.
 
After recording even kills with ECSU (11-11) while capturing set one 25-20, the Lady Panthers dominated the early goings of set two.  Claflin scored the first 11 points of the set.  After getting on the scoreboard off a side-out, Taylor Drayton served 10 straight points for the 11-0 lead.
 
The Lady Panthers went up 14-2 before ECSU offense picked up.  The Vikings scored five straight points to cut the lead to seven.  Claflin went on a five point run on its own to take a 19-9 lead.
 
ECSU continued to battle pulling within four late in the set but could not get any closer, falling in set two 25-20.
 
Claflin remained aggressive in set three, jumping out a 12-5 lead.  The Vikings continued to battle, pulling within one, 19-18, before the Lady Panthers used a 6-2 run to close the set with the 25-20 win and the match 3-0.
 
Claflin out-hit ECSU 39 kills to 29 and picked up 14 more than digs than the Lady Broncos (66-52).
 
The Lady Panthers will hit the road for its next six matches beginning next Wednesday, Oct. 9 when they travel to Salisbury, NC to face Livingstone College in a CIAA southern division match.
