Claflin Faces Augusta in Home-Opener on Wednesday

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Panthers of Claflin University will make their 2019-20 home debut on Wednesday (Nov. 13) against Augusta University, ranked 13^th in the D2SIDA Men's Basketball National Poll, at the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Wellness Center (Tullis Arena).

Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Both teams will enter the non-conference matchup with 1-1 records.

Claflin posted its win over Kutztown University, 94-77, behind 33-point outing by Letrell West in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)/Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) challenge last weekend.

West, a sophomore guard, scored 21 of his game-high offensive production in the first half. He was 11-of-15 (73.3%) from the floor with four three-pointers and 7-for-8 at the charity stripe.

West leads the team in scoring at 23.5 points followed by guard Brandon Davis, the only other Panther in double-figures, with 10.5 points.

The third member of the Panthers backcourt, guard Romero Hill is averaging 9.0 points and a team-best 3.5 assists.

Forward Cornellius Reynolds is the top post player, pulling down 9.0 rebounds while averaging 8.0 points.

As for Augusta, the Jags edged Barton College, 88-85, in the 45 Second Classic in their last outing.

Augusta is led in scoring by Rafael Monteiro at 21 points per game and Tyree Myers with 13.5 points.

This will be the third meeting between the two teams since Claflin became a NCAA Division II member. In the two previous meetings, each team won at their place. Augusta won 65-56 at home during the 2016-17 season, while the Panthers posted a 66-62 decision at Orangeburg in the 2015-16 campaign.

After the Augusta contest, Claflin will take on Fisk University for homecoming on Saturday (Nov. 16) at 3:30 p.m.
