Stillman Defeats Claflin for Homecoming

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Lady Panthers of Claflin University remained winless for the season, dropping a 57-46 decision to Stillman College for homecoming on Saturday (Nov. 16) at the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Wellness Center (Tullis Arena).
 
The homecoming loss ended a string of three straight wins for Claflin during the annual event. The Lady Panthers are now 0-2 on the young season.
 
Claflin will depart Orangeburg for four straight road games, beginning with Francis Marion University (Nov. 18). The following three games will be against Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) teams, Elizabeth City State University (Nov. 21), in non-conference action and Virginia State University (Nov. 23) and Virginia Union University (Nov. 25) in CIAA conference play.
 
As for Stillman, the Tigers claimed their first win of the season in four outings.
 
Dionna Long led the Lady Panthers in a losing effort with 13 points, 11 coming in the first half. She also finished the game with two three-pointers and six rebounds  Lydia Goolsby also pulled in six rebounds in the contest.
 
Dashia Jackson was the only other player in double-figures for Claflin with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. She also knocked down three, three-point baskets.
 
Shakarri Mack added eight points for the Lady Panthers, including 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
 
Stillman was led in scoring by Zaria Jenkins with a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds.  Shania Osbourne and Ashley World also finished the game in double-digits at 12 and 11, respectively.
 
Both teams had shooting problems from the field as Stillman shot 39.7 percent (25-for-58), while Claflin managed only 23.9 percent (11-for-46).
 
The Lady Panthers faired a little better at the free throw line at 61.3 percent (19-for-31) and Stillman hit 58.3 percent (7-for-12).
 
Stillman won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Claflin by a 43-35 margin.
 
In the contest, Stillman outscored the Lady Panthers 15-4 in the fourth quarter in picking up the road win.
 
The two teams entered the final period deadlocked at 42-42.
 
The Tiger offense also outscored Claflin 35-20 in the second half.
 
The first quarter saw the Lady Panthers extended an 8-7 lead late in the period to 14-7 with two-minute left on back-to-back three-pointers from Long and Jackson.
 
The second quarter saw Stillman outscored Claflin 15-12 but still trailed 26-22 at intermission.
