Claflin Falls to Francis Marion

Florence, S.C. – The Lady Panthers of Claflin University fell to Francis Marion, 75-54, in a non-conference women's basketball game on Monday (Nov. 18).

The loss dropped Claflin to 0-3 on the season, while Francis Marion remained unbeaten at 2-0.

Claflin Dionna Long led all scorers with a career-best 19 points including 6-of-8 from the free throw line and seven rebounds. Shakarri Mack was the only other player in double-figures for the Lady Panthers with 10 points. She also pulled in seven rebounds.

Dashia Jackson contributed seven points along with a team-high 10 rebounds and five assists for Claflin.

For the game, the Lady Panthers went 19-of-68 (27.9%) from the field compared to Francis Marion 28-of-66 (43.4%).  Francis Marion had eight three-pointers in the game to just three for Claflin.

Zaria Woods led Francis Marion with 17 points on 8-for-9 shooting from the field. Kiana Adderton added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Patriots.

A slow offensive first quarter put the Lady Panthers in the hole early.

After Jackson gave Claflin its last lead of the game at 5-4 on a free throw with 6:43 on the clock, Francis Marion scored 11 unanswered points. The scoring outburst provided Francis Marion a 15-5 lead with 3:12 left in the opening quarter.

The Patriots finished the quarter with an 8-3 run to lead 23-8.

After Francis Marion took a 29-10 lead with 7:25 remaining in the second quarter, Claflin managed to decrease the lead to single digits by halftime. The Lady Panthers outscored Patriots 16-5 over the final seven minutes to trail 34-26 at the half.

In the third quarter, the two teams exchanged baskets early with Francis Marion holding a 36-28 advantage at 9:26 mark. That would be the closes for Claflin as the Patriots scored nine of the next 11 points over a three-minute span to go up 45-30. From that point, Francis Marion outscored Claflin 16-11 to end the quarter with a 61-41 lead.

The two teams played nearly even in the fourth quarter with Francis Marion edging Claflin 14-13 in the period.
