Virginia State Defeats Claflin Lady Panthers in CIAA Action

Ettrick, Va. – The Lady Panthers of Claflin University suffered their fifth straight loss to start the season, falling to Virginia State University, 70-62, in its Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opener on Saturday (Nov. 23).
 
Claflin (0-5, 0-1 CIAA) will conclude its four-game road trip on Monday (Nov. 25) at Virginia Union University in another CIAA matchup. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Barco-Stevens Hall on the Virginia Union campus.
 
Virginia State, which also entered the game winless, improved to 1-3 on the season and 1-0 in the CIAA.
 
The Lady Panthers racked up their most offensive-point production this season of 62 points, 43 coming in the second half. In that half, Claflin shot 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the field which included 8-of-13 from the free-throw line along with five three-pointers.
 
The first half was a different story for Claflin, as the Lady Panthers hit just 14.3 percent (5-for-35) from the field, scoring a combined 19 points in two quarters.
 
Dashia Jackson led the Lady Panthers with 17 points including five three-pointers, four in the second-half.
 
Dionna Long also hit double-digits for Claflin with 12 points.
 
Shakarri Mack and Danyelle Riddick pulled in nine and eight rebounds, respectively. Joice Beda Thomas had seven points and nine rebounds for the Lady Panthers.
 
Natalia Leaks led Virginia State with a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds.
