Dickens Scored 24 Points in Losing Effort

Orangeburg, S.C. – Deja Dickens tied a career-high with 24 points to lead three Lady Panthers in double-figures, but it wasn't enough as Johnson C. Smith University defeated Claflin University 79-70 in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest on Monday (Feb. 11) at the Tullis Arena.

The loss extended Claflin losing streak to three games, dropping the Lady Panthers season record to 12-13 overall and 8-9 in the CIAA.

Dickens, who was 10-for-20 from the floor with four three-pointers, also scored 24 points against Virginia Union University earlier in the season.

Ashley Fields produced her eighth double-double of the season with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Fields has scored in double-digits 21 times this season for Claflin. She also dished out four assists and added three steals.

Dashia Jackson was the other double-figure scorer for the Lady Panthers with 17 points, giving her 18 games in double-digits this season.

Dickens, Fields and Jackson accounted for 84.2 percent (59 points) of the Lady Panthers offensive production.

Johnson C. Smith, now 13-12 and 10-5, was led by JaKeyah McNeil with 20 points and Le'Zarea Bowens at 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Like the first meeting between the two teams last month, Claflin played Johnson C. Smith tough in the first quarter, but the second quarter was the different again for Lady Panthers.

After leading 15-13 at the end of the opening quarter, Claflin quickly found itself trailing 21-15 after the first 2:30 minutes of the second quarter as Johnson C. Smith scored the first eight points.

After a basket by Jackson, the Golden Bulls went on another 8-0 run, increasing their lead to 29-17 at the 4:14 mark of the quarter.

Johnson C. Smith finished the quarter, outscoring Claflin 9-6 to lead 38-23 at halftime.

Claflin scored just eight points in the second quarter, four coming from the free throw line, and shot just 18.2 percent (2-of-11) from the floor.

In the meantime, the Golden Bulls hit 55.5 percent (10-of-18) that included a pair of three pointers in the quarter.

Fields tried to keep the Lady Panthers within striking distance with 10 points and nine rebounds in the first half.

In the second half, Claflin outscored Johnson C. Smith 47-41 with 30 points coming in the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, both teams shot 50 percent from the field, but Lady Panthers had 12 field goals, three from behind the three-point line, and three free throws.

The Golden Bulls had six field goals and connected on 10-of-13 free throws. For the game, the Golden Bulls were 16-of-27 for the charity stripe, while Claflin was 13-of-18.

The Lady Panthers will wrap of their regular-season next week, hosting Livingstone College on (Feb. 18) in their last CIAA outing followed by arch-rival Benedict College on (Feb. 21) in a non-conference contest.
