Claflin Sweeps Bluefield State in Baseball

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University offense generated 10 runs in the first three innings, highlighted by a Nicholas Johnson's grand slam, as the Panthers claimed a 10-2 win over Bluefield State College on Sunday (Feb. 17) at Historic Mirmow Field.
 
The win provided Claflin the series sweep and improved the Panthers early season record to 7-3. In the weekend series, the Panthers racked up 25 runs and pounded out 24 hits with two runs.
 
In the series finale, Claflin set the tone for the game with five runs in the first-inning. The Panthers started the fireworks after one out when an Edzaviah Paul single was followed by a walk to Craig Hopkins. Paul was brought home on a run-scoring single by Eric McElveen, giving Claflin a 1-0 lead.
 
With runners on first and second, Gerardic Dobbs singled to load the bases, setting the stage for Johnson's grand slam, hit first homer in a Panther uniform.
 
Claflin followed the scoring outburst with four more runs in the second inning and another one in the third.
 
The Panthers finished the day with seven hits with Johnson leading the way with two hits and five RBIs.
 
Clyde Parker, Paul and McElveen had a hit and an RBI each for Claflin.
 
Bluefield, now 3-4, was led by Cayden Ross with two hits and an RBI.
 
Cleveland Westbrook, 2-0, picked up the win on the mound for Claflin, allowing seven hits with no walks and striking out five over five innings of work.
 
Lyndale Morley pitched the final four innings, giving up three hits, one walk and striking out five batters.
 
Brandon Wortkogetter was the losing pitcher for Bluefield State.
 
Claflin will return to action on Feb 26th in a double header at home against Lincoln University (Pa.).
