Francis Marion Defeats Claflin in Baseball

Orangeburg, S.C. – Francis Marion University got even with Claflin University on the baseball diamond, defeating the Panthers 10-5 on Wednesday (Mar. 20 at Historic Mirmow Field to avenge an early season loss.
 
The two teams spilt the series at 1-1 with Claflin winning 11-6 in Florence earlier in the season.
 
The home loss dropped the Panthers to 14-9 on the season, while Francis Marion improved to 18-9.
 
The Patriots scored all their runs over the first seven innings in building a 10-0 lead.
 
Claflin rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth-inning but could get no closer. Grayland Fowler produced the Panthers first run of the game with an RBI single scoring Gerardic Dobbs. Fowler collected three of the Panthers six hits in the game.
 
The next three runs for the Panthers resulted from bases loaded walks issued to Jalen Sprull, Craig Hopkins and Eric McElveenClyde Parker, Malik James and Fowler scored runs off the walks.
 
Sprull crossed the plate on a wild pitch to score Claflin last run of the game.
 
Francis Marion was led by Nick Pappas at 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs.
 
Isaac Rodgers, 5-0, was the winning pitcher for Francis Marion, while Jamal Devine, 1-1, suffered the loss for Claflin.
 
Cleveland Westbrook, the winning pitcher in the first meeting, pitched the last four innings for Claflin, allowing the Patriots only two runs on four hits and striking out four.
 
Claflin will return to action on Sunday (Mar. 24) at Paine College for a 1 p.m. contest.
