Claflin Baseball Falls to Paine in Extra Innings

Augusta, Ga. (03-24-19) – Paine College scored two runs in the bottom of the 13th to come from behind to defeat Claflin University, 4-3, in extra innings, Sunday (Mar. 24) in Augusta, Ga.  With the loss, the Panthers second straight, Claflin falls to 14-10 overall. Paine picks up its fourth win of the season and is now 4-14-1 on the season.
 
Claflin opened the scoring of the game in the top of the third.  After Edzaviah Paul led off the inning with a single, the next two batters walked to load the bases. With one out Gerardric Dobbs reached on a fielder's choice allowing Paul to cross the plate for the first run of the game.
 
The Panthers pushed its lead to 2-0 as Craig Hopkins scored off a sacrifice fly by Dobbs.  Hopkins led off the inning with a double.
 
Paine put up one run in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the game at 2-all.
 
Neither team could cross the plate in the final two innings of regulation, forcing the extra period.
 
Despite both teams having opportunities over the next three innings, neither team managed to score.  The teams combined to leave eight runners on base over the three innings. 
 
Eric McElveen hit a two-out homer in the top of the 13th to break the tie and give Claflin the one run lead. 
 
Paine remained resilient, scoring two runs in its half of the 13th to pick up the win. With two on and two out, Latek McNeil hit a RBI single to score Antonio Sanders who reached base via a walk to start the inning.  With two Lions still on the base-pads, Jaylin Young hit a RBI single to score Anthony Ellis, who was intentionally walked, for the game winner.
 
Craig Hopkins had three hits and a run while Grayland Fowler hits for the Panthers in the loss.  Paul and McElveen were the other two run producers for Claflin.
 
Cleveland Westbrook, who came in to pitch 7.2 innings, was the losing pitcher of record.
 
Claflin will have five days to regroup before returning to action this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, Mar. 30-31, when they host Morehouse College in a three-game series.  The series gets underway with a 1 p.m. double header on Saturday and will conclude with a single game on Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
