Claflin Sweeps Morehouse in Weekend Baseball Series

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University baseball team blasted three home runs in the series finale on Sunday (Mar. 31) in defeating Morehouse College 14-1 at Historic Mirmow Field.
 
The win provided Claflin a sweep of the three-game series as the Panthers won both games of the double header on Saturday (Mar. 30) by the scores of 12-9 and 11-5.
 
Claflin is now 17-10 on the season, while Morehouse dropped to 5-20.
 
The Panthers finished the series with a team batting average of .340 that included five home runs, 32 hits and 37 runs scored.
 
In the final game of the series, Nicholas Johnson was perfect at the plate going 3-for-3 with three runs scored including a home run and 2 RBIs; Clyde Parker went 2-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBIs; and Craig Hopkins finished with a home run and 4 RBIs.
 
Gerardic Dobbs was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
 
Amyr Smith had two hits to lead Morehouse.
 
Makai Holloway, 4-1, was the winning pitcher for Claflin, going seven innings with six hits and six strike outs.
 
Jordan Davis, 0-3, suffered the loss for the Maroon Tigers.
 
On Saturday Eric McElveen and Dobbs supplied the bulk of the Panther offense. McElveen belted out a two-run homer in both games, finishing 5-for-6 on the day with four runs scored and 8 RBIs. Dobbs added a two-run blast in the second contest, ending the day at 3-for-6 with 3 RBIs.
 
Other hitters enjoying productive outings in the twin-bill for Claflin were Jalen Sprull at 4-for-8 with three runs scored and 2 RBIs and Edzaviah Paul who collected two hits and scored five times.
 
The Panthers pounded five Maroon Tigers pitchers for 21 hits in the two games.
 
In the opener, Dillon Parker improved his season record to 4-1 on the mound for the Panthers, allowing only one earned run in 4.1 innings with six hits.
 
Eric Dubose picked up the save, pitching the final 2.1 innings.
 
The second game of the day saw Cleveland Westbrook become a four-game winner at 4-2 for Claflin, giving up nine hits and striking out eight in six innings of work.
 
Angel Morel pitched a scoreless seventh for the Panthers.
 
Morehouse was led in the double header by Smith at 4-for-8 with 2 RBIs.
 
Claflin will travel to rival Benedict for a mid-week contest on Tuesday (Apr. 2) at 1 p.m.
