Claflin Sweep Virginia State in Doubleheader

Orangeburg, S.C. – Clyde Parker, Jalen Sprull and Grayland Fowler produced key hits and Cleveland Westbrook tossed a complete game as Claflin University swept Virginia State University in a baseball double-header, 11-10 and 3-1, on Saturday (Apr. 6) at Historic Mirmow Field.
 
With the wins, Claflin improved its season record to 19-10, while Virginia State dropped to 11-14.
 
In the opener, the Panthers rallied for four runs in the seventh, highlighted by a game-winning hit by Sprull. Sprull hit a run-scoring single with two outs to score Elliott Melton, who was in as a pinch runner, from third base for the winning run.
 
Claflin trailed 10-4 after four innings of play.  The Panthers pushed across three runs in the fifth, setting the stage for the come-from-behind victory.
 
Clyde Parker led Claflin at plate, driving in six runs, via a two-run homer in the second inning, three more runs with a double in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly that scored a run in the seventh.
 
Eric McElveen and Sprull had two hits and an RBI each, while Craig Hopkins and Nicholas Johnson added two hits each in game one.
 
Virginia State was led by Sisqo Scott, Kevin Russell and Keyon Smith at two hits and 3 RBIs apiece.
 
Torriun Towers pitched the final four innings for Claflin, allowing six hits and one run in picking up the win.
 
Jose Martinez was the loser for Virginia State.
 
In the second game, Fowler drove home two runs with a double in the bottom of the sixth as the Panthers posted their second come-from-behind victory on the day. Claflin added an insurance run when Malik James scored from third base on a fielder's choice by Edzaviah Paul.
 
Fowler and Johnson had two hits each to lead the Panthers in game two.
 
Cecil Henderson and Scott had a double each for Virginia State.
 
On the mound, Westbrook, now 5-2, held Virginia State to five hits and struck out four batters and no earned run in going the distance.
 
Jason Martinez took the loss for Virginia State.
 
The teams will meet again on Sunday (Apr. 7) in another double header at Mirmow Field. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m. with the second game following approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first.
