Claflin Track & Field Had Solid Performance at Savannah State Invitational

Savannah, Ga. (Mar. 2)—The Claflin University men's and women's track and field teams posted several top 10 finishes at the Savannah State Eyeopener last weekend (Mar. 2). The meet was the first outdoor meet of the season for the Panthers, who has nine regular season meets on the slate in 2019.

The Panther women were led by Zaria Nelson, who earned gold in the discus with a throw of 41.40 meters. Nelson placed second in both the shot put and the hammer throw with distances of 12.50 meters and 38.33 meters, respectively.

Also finishing in the top 10 for the Claflin women were Ty'Sha Hamon-Dubose and Kiara Belton, who placed fifth and sixth, respectively in the 100 meters.

Domenic Samuel, who is coming off his CIAA Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship MVP for the Running Events, paced the men, finishing second in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:10.92.

Track newcomer Ashtin Knowles finished fourth in the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.84 while Derick St. Jean, who is set to compete in the NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend, placed fifth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.16.

Both Claflin teams will return to action next Saturday, Mar. 16 when they travel to Charleston, S.C. to participate in the CSU Spring Break Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern University.
