Orangeburg, SC – Alan Burnsed and Collin Camerigg each hit solo home runs in the top of the 11
th inning to lead Florida Southern College past Claflin University, 4-2, in the first-game of a three-game baseball series at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg, SC. The second game of the series is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday (Mar. 9).
The loss snaps a three-game win streak for Claflin dropping the Panthers to 12-5 on the season. Florida Southern improves to 9-8 on the season.
Burnsed and Camerigg led the Mocs on the day with going 3-for-4 and 2-for-6, respectively.
Eric McElveen went 1-for-4 with a run and
Jalen Sprull went 1-for-5 with a run and a RBI to pace the Panthers.
Dillon Parker went six strong innings, allowing just six hits with no runs against 25 batters faced.
The game was a battle of the pitchers over the first six innings with neither team crossing plate.
The Mocs got on the scoreboard first in the top of the seventh inning as Vaun Brown hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the 7th to bring in Isaiah Cullum. Cullum led off the inning with a walk and moved into scoring position off a wild pitch and later advanced on a single by Burnsed.
Florida Southern held Claflin scoreless in its half of the seventh.
The Mocs put up an additional run in the top of the eighth. With two outs Christian Maglich singled to left center and advanced to second on a wild pitch to put a run in scoring position. Ricky Gonzalez followed the single with a run scoring double to put Florida Southern up by two runs.
The Panthers remained poised in their half of the inning. With one out and one on Sprull hit a single to right field to bring in McElveen, who reached on an error by the Mocs short stop, for the Panthers first run of the game.
Craig Hopkins hit a run scoring double to left center to bring in Sprull for the tying run in the bottom of the eighth.
Neither team managed to get a run across in the bottom of the ninth forcing extra innings.
The Mocs threatened in the top of the 10th as Maglich hit a single with one. Maglich advanced to second but could not cross the plate.
