Claflin Falls to Florida Southern 6-1

Orangeburg, S.C. – Florida Southern College took the second game of its three-game weekend series with Claflin University on Saturday (Mar. 9), defeating the Panthers 6-1 at Mirmow Field.

Claflin, now 12-6 on the season, will try to avoid the series sweep on Sunday (Mar. 10) when the two teams meet in the finale at 1 p.m.

Florida Southern improved to 11-8.

Jacob Teter supplied most of the offense for Florida Southern, accounting for four of the Mocs six runs. Teter two-run homer off Eric Dubose in the first inning gave the visitors an early 2-0 lead. He later added a two-run single in the three-run seventh for the Mocs.

Florida Southern added its final run in the eighth inning.

For the second straight game, the Panthers starters held the Florida Southern offense in check for the first six innings. In the series-opener, Dillon Parker had the Panthers in a scoreless contest after six innings before giving away to the bullpen.

As for Dubose, the righthander surrendered the first-inning home run, but limited the Mocs to just four hits over the next five innings as the Panthers trailed 2-1 after six complete. It was in the seventh-inning that Dubose gave up three runs on three hits.

Matt Martin, 3-2, was the winning pitcher for Florida Southern.  Dubose, 1-1, was the losing pitcher for the Panthers.

The Panthers generated only five hits in the game and went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring positions. Claflin only run came on a Craig Hopkins sacrifice fly that brought home Gerardric Dobbs from third base. Dobbs reached base with a one-out single and advanced to third on a walk by Edzaviah and Grayland Fowler single that loaded the bases with Dobbs on third.

Dobbs and Hopkins had two hits apiece to lead the Panthers.
