Claflin Baseball Drops Weekend Series to Winston-Salem State

Orangeburg, S.C. -- The Claflin University baseball team dropped all three games of the weekend series to Winston-Salem to close out the 2019 regular season. The Panthers will travel to Marion, N.C. to participate in the Independent Schools Tournament scheduled for May 3-5, 2019.
 
With the losses Claflin falls to 23-15 while Winston Salem State improves to 30-15 on the season.
 
The series, which opened Saturday, Apr. 27 at Fluor Field as part of the HBCU Classic, saw Winston-Salem State come away with a 16-1 win. In the contest, the Rams put up 13 hits and forced five Panther errors in capturing the lopsided victory.  Claflin was held to just five hits in the game.
 
Eric McElveen scored the Panthers lone run in the contest.
 
Cole parks, who was the winning pitcher in the opening game, went 2-for-4 with three runs.  Hunter Phillips had two hits with two runs and four RBIs and Nick Williams had three hits, including a home run, with four RBIs to lead Winston-Salem St. 
 
Cleveland Westbrook (5-4) was the losing pitcher for Claflin.
 
The double header games of the series moved to Asheboro, N.C. on Sunday (Apr. 28) with Winston-Salem State as the home team.
 
The Rams cruised past the Panthers, 20-6 and 13-8.
 
In the opening game of the double header, Winston-Salem State jumped ahead 5-1 after three complete and kept pressing.  Claflin cut the deficit to three, 6-3 after four and a half innings but Winston-Salem State's bats came back to life 
 
The Rams used a seven run bottom of the fifth to take a 13-3 lead.
 
After Claflin scored two additional run in the top of the sixth, Winston-Salem State scored seven more runs in its half of the sixth to go ahead 20-5.  The Panthers put up one more run on the scoreboard in the seventh before falling in game one.
 
Six different Panther players scored runs in game one.  Grayland Fowler, Craig Hopkins, Clyde Parker, Gerardic Dobbs, Nick Johnson and Edzaviah Paul all crossed the plate for Claflin.
 
Williams and Phillips once again led the Rams.  Williams finished game one of the double header 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.  Phillips finished the game with a home run, two walks and six RBIs.
 
Jalen Scott was the winning pitcher while Dillon Parker was credited with the game one loss.
 
Claflin offense increased in the final game of the series.  The Panthers finished the second game of the double header with eight runs and 11 hits.
 
Winston-Salem State's offense remained solid in the final game, putting up 11 hits of its own with en route to scoring 13 runs.
 
For the first time in the series, The Panthers took the lead in the opening inning.  Claflin put five runs in the opening inning and held the Rams to three for the 5-3 advantage.
 
After neither team scored in the second, Claflin put up one run in the third for a 6-3 lead, but the Rams remained poised.
 
Winston-Salem State put up two runs in the third and six in the fourth to take the lead for good, 11-6.
 
Claflin continued to battle, scoring two runs in the fifth to pull within three, 11-8, but the Rams defense remained solid over the final two innings while its offense continued to push, scoring two runs in the sixth to take the 13-8 win and the series sweep.
 
Clyde Parker went 3-for-4 with two doubles and one run and Kyriq Woods finished 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI to pace Claflin.  Dobbs had a homerun and three RBIs in the game.
 
Winston-Salem State was led in game two of the double header by Wellington Guzman who went 2-for-3 with two runs and Kendal Tucker knocked out a home run in the win.
 
Parker Strader was the winning pitcher in the final game while Makai Holloway was the losing pitcher for Claflin.
