Claflin Softball Sweeps CIAA Weekly Honors

Charlotte, NC (Feb. 10) – For the second straight week, Claflin University softball swept the Food Lion Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Weekly honors. Earning the honors this week were Chaston Huntly (Offensive Player of the Week), Marion Goins (Defensive Player of the Week), Bre'Zhay Chambers (Pitcher of the Week) and Jaelyn Jackson (Rookie of the Week).

Last Week (Feb. 3), Goins was named Defensive Player of the Week and Jackson was named Pitcher and Rookie of the Week. Jada Ames earned Offensive Player of the Week.

This week, Huntly, 5-6, So., infielder from Lexington, SC, recorded four hits, including a pair of home runs and two doubles, and drove in three runs while scoring two more. The Lexington, SC native finished with a .364 batting average and 1.091 slugging percentage, helping the Lady Panthers to a 2-2 record on the week.

Goins, a 5-3, sophomore catcher, finished with 27 putouts and five assists with no errors over four games. The sophomore catcher also caught three runners stealing and helped the Lady Panthers to a 2-2 record on the week.

Chambers, a 5-3, So., pitcher from Rock Hill, SC, pitched 12 innings with 15 strikeouts, including nine in a win over Anderson, and just three walks in two games on the mound this past week. The sophomore pitcher held opponents to a .205 batting average and allowed just two earned runs, finishing with a 1-1 record for the week.

Rounding out the weekly honorees is Jackson, a 5-6 pitcher/infielder, who finished the week with two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs over the weekend and the Lady Panthers finished with a 2-2 record. The Denver, CO native also pitched eight and two-thirds innings with nine strikeouts and just three walks, finishing with a 1-1 record on the mound.

Claflin will return to action this weekend, Friday and Sunday, Feb. 15 and 17. The Lady Panthers will host the University of Charleston (WV.) on Friday at 1 p.m. and Slippery Rock on Sunday at 12 noon. Both contests are doubleheaders and will be played at the North Road Complex in Orangeburg.
