34 Claflin Student-Athletes Earn Degrees During Commencement Convocations

Orangeburg, S.C. — As Claflin University celebrated its Commencement Convocation on Saturday, April 24, 34 student-athletes were among the 2019 graduating class who received their bachelor's and master's degrees in various disciplines. 
 
For the first time, the Baccalaureate Service was held virtually. Reverend Dr. Benjamin D. Snoddy, '69, Rev. Dr. Snoddy, Assistant Dean of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education delivered the Baccalaureate address on Friday evening, April 23. 
 
Another first this year was the combination of two graduating classes. After having its 2020 Commencement Convocations canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the University decided to honor both the Fall Class of 2020 and the Spring Class of 2021 in April. While the Convocations were held on the same day, each class had separate ceremonies.
 
Claflin Athletics saw eight student-athletes receive degrees as part of the 2020 ceremony and 26 student-athletes and one staff member receive their degree during the 2021 ceremony.  
 
Obtaining degrees during the 2020 ceremony were: MarQuette Bizzell (men's track and field), Romero Hill (men's basketball), Mykal Johnson (men's basketball), Jesus Morel (baseball), Cornellius Reynolds (men's basketball), Jalen Sprull (baseball), Lariah Stevens, MBA (women's basketball), and Jordan Taylor (volleyball).
 
Receiving degrees during the 2021 ceremony were: Jada Ames (softball), Keati Buchanann (baseball), Myles Coverson-Springs (cheer), Alexus Edmond (women's track and field), Gari Forehand (women's track and field), Donnell Frayer Jr. (men's basketball), Destiny Hall (women's track and field), Ambria Henry (women's track and field), Reagan Hill (softball), Tatyanna Hollins (women's basketball), Makai Holloway (baseball), Mercedes Howze (softball), Markayla Hunter (cheer), Chaston Huntly (softball), Noah Jenkins (men's basketball), Tre' Jeter (women's track and field), Nicholas Johnson (baseball), Kashara Maggette (cheer), Rodney Prichard (men's basketball), Jala Roberts (volleyball), Na-Talya Salters (cheer), Nijha Shannon (women's basketball), Labarron Sledge (cheer), Shamar Thomas (baseball), Tavion Towers (baseball), Kyriq Woods (baseball).
 
In addition to the 34-total student-athletes, graduate assistant track and field coach Alexis Hunter-Lonon received her MBA during the 2021 Commencement Convocation.
