Box Score Augusta, Ga.-- The Augusta University baseball team scored five runs in the last two innings in rallying from a one-run deficit for 12-8 win over Claflin University on Wednesday (Feb. 28) at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
With the loss, Claflin falls to 2-13 on the season, while Augusta is now 6-10.
In the non-conference contest, the Panthers trailed by two runs at 7-5 heading into the seventh inning. It was in that inning, Claflin scored three runs for its first and only lead of the game at 8-7. The Panthers runs were a result of a balk that scored Johnathan Parnell II from third base and a
Clyde Parker two-run double.
The Claflin lead lasted until the bottom of the inning as Augusta scored twice to regain the advantage for good at 9-8. Augusta tacked on three more in the eight for the final score.
Parker led Claflin at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance that included a pair of doubles and three RBIs.
Other top hitters for the Panthers were
Elliott Melton 1-for-3 with two RBIs,
Eric McElveen with a double and an RBI, Parnell II contributed a triple and scored a run, while
Darrell Langston had a double with a run scored.
Augusta was led by Bakari Gayle with a home run and Jose Nagueras who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Harold Smith took the loss for Claflin, while Casey Lenoch was the winning pitcher for Augusta.
Claflin will return to action this weekend, hosting The College of Saint Rose in a three-game series. A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday (Mar. 3), starting at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday (Mar. 4) at 2 p.m. All Claflin baseball games are played at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg, S.C.
