Claflin Softball Return to the Diamond vs Bluefield State

Lady Panthers Set to Participate in Their First-Ever CIAA Roundup

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University softball team will return to the diamond, Wednesday, Mar. 13 when they travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to face Bluefield State in a neutral site non-conference double header at The Ripken Experience.

First pitch for game one is set for a 1 p.m. with the second game starting 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first.

Claflin will enter Wednesday's game with an 11-12 overall record. This will be the Lady Panthers first game since sweeping Johnson C. Smith University, (8-0, 8-0), in their CIAA debut last Monday (Mar. 4).

Senior Kayla Cato, this week CIAA Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, is leading the team in batting at .403. She has amassed 27 hits, 23 runs, 24 RBIs and five homeruns on the season.

The Lady Panthers have two additional players batting over .300 as senior LaKaylin Lee and freshman Chaston Huntly are batting .397 and .383 respectively.

On the mound, freshman Shaniya Thomas, this week CIAA Pitcher of the Week, is pacing the pitching staff with a 2.01 ERA and a team-leading 41 strikeouts. Another freshman, Bre'Zhay Chambers, is second in strikeouts with 24.

Bluefield State has played just five games on the season and brings a 4-1 record into Wednesday's contest.

After Wednesday's contest with Bluefield State, Claflin will travel to Elizabeth City, N.C. to participate in their first-ever CIAA Roundup, Friday-Sunday, Mar. 15-17. The Lady Panthers will meet the six teams from the Northern Division of the conference over the three-day period.
