Claflin Host Benedict in Non-Conference Softball Action

Orangeburg, SC – The Claflin University softball team will step out of conference Tuesday (Mar. 26) when they host Benedict College in an afternoon double header. First pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m. at Adden Street Field in Orangeburg. The second game of the double header will start 20 minutes after the conclusion of the first at approximately 4 p.m.

Claflin is coming off a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) double header sweep over Fayetteville State on Saturday, winning 8-0 and 3-0. The Lady Panthers have won their last 14-of-15 games and bring a 23-13 record into the double header.

Benedict enters the double header with an 11-14 overall record and the Lady Tigers are losers of six straight contests.

On the season, Claflin is batting.309 with 268 hits, 239 runs, 21 homeruns and 205 RBIs. The Lady Panthers are led offensively by Kayla Cato. On the season, Cato is batting .398 with 38 runs, 39 hits, including eight homeruns, with 39 RBIs and a slugging percentage of .796. Defensively, Cato has a .995 fielding percentage with 208 putouts.

Overall, Claflin has four players batting over .300 as LaKaylin Lee is batting .388, Chaston Huntly is hitting .367 and Sametra Duck his averaging right at .327. Lee has recorded 39 runs with 38 hits (4 homeruns), with 21 RBIs.

On the mound, Claflin is led by the freshman duo of Shaniya Thomas and Bre'Zhay Chambers. Thomas and Chambers have combined for 17 of the Lady Panthers 23 wins.

Thomas is undefeated at 7-0 with four complete games, three shutouts, five saves and an ERA of 1.07 in 67.2 innings pitched.

Chambers, this week's CIAA Pitcher of the Week, has a 10-6 record with five complete games, four shutouts and an ERA of 3.50.

Benedict is batting .322 as a team with 170 runs with 202 hits on the season. Starkeia Daniel is batting .426 with 29 hits and 22 runs to lead the Lady Tigers.

Claflin will return to CIAA action next Tuesday, Apr. 2 when they host Saint Augustine's University in a double header.
