Claflin Track and Field Return to Action at Terrier Relays

Orangeburg, SC – After a successful outing last weekend at the CIU Invitational hosted by Columbia International, the Claflin University men's and women's track and field teams will return to action in Spartanburg, S.C. at the Terrier Relays hosted by Wofford College, Saturday, March 30.

The meet, which will be held at Spartanburg High School, gets underway at 10 a.m. with the men's 5000.  The field events will start at 10:30 a.m. with the men's javelin.

The Panther men will be led by Derick St. Jean who has provisionally qualified for the NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 200 meters.  St. Jean was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Track Athlete of the Week this week.

Middle-distance runner Domenic Samuel should also have a good showing on the track.  At the CIU Invitational, Samuel set the school record in the 800 meters en route to capturing gold.

Additionally, sprinters Davion McKnight-Allen and Ashtin Knowles will be called upon to provide a solid performance on the track for the Panther men.

In the field, Claflin will rely on MarQuette Bizzell, Jr. and Isaiah Milhouse.  Bizzell finished second in the triple jump while Milhouse finished third in both the hammer and javelin at the CIU Invitational last weekend.

The Claflin women had an equally positive showing at the CIU Invitational and will be looking to remain consistent in its performance.

Field eventers Zaria Nelson and Lonesha Bethea both captured gold in their respective events at the meet and will once again lead the Lady Panther field eventers.  Nelson, this week CIAA Women's Field Athlete of the Week, won the discus and placed third in the hammer while Bethea captured first in the javelin.

On the track, the Claflin women will look to Kiara Belton to lead the way along with Daija Pegues.  Belton finished third in both the 100 and 200 meters at the CIU Invitational with season best times in both.  Pegues showed marked improvements finishing second in the 400 meters at the meet.

Based on past performances both the men's and women's 4x100 meter and 4x400 meter relay teams should finish in the top five at the meet.

The Claflin men's and women's track and field teams will be back in action next weekend, Friday-Saturday, April 5-6, at the JCSU Invitational T&F Meet.
