Lee, Cato Named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District® Softball Team

Orangeburg, S.C. – Former Claflin University softball players Kayla Cato and LaKaylin Lee have been named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District® Softball Team (District 2). The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District Softball Team was announced last Thursday, May 9 via the CoSIDA Website.

The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Softball Team, selected by CoSIDA, recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes softball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

Both Cato and Lee advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (when selected) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in June.

Lee, a 5-2, outfielder, from, Decatur, Ga., was named to the 2019 All-CIAA First Team. She is also a 2019 Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Softball All-Atlantic Region Second Team Selection. Lee is a 2019 Summa Cum Laude graduate with a degree in Business Management and finished the season ranked 11th in sacrifice flies and 32nd in runs per game in the nation. Lee finished her career with a .385 batting average, a .608 slugging percentage along with 100 of 107 stolen bases. This season she amassed 55 runs with 55 hits including nine doubles, five triples and four homeruns with 32 RBIs and 30 stolen bases in 31 attempts.

Cato, a 5-10, infielder, from Decatur, Ga., finished her career with a batting average of .344 and a slugging percentage of .692. She accumulated 216 runs, 230 hits, including 51 homeruns, and 197 RBIs and 209 stolen bases in 212 attempts. Cato is an ASBA Draft Prospect and a 2019 Cum Laude graduate with a degree in Mass Communications and a minor in Marketing. She was named the 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Player of the Year, All-CIAA First Team and to the 2019 CIAA All-Tournament Team. She is also a 2019 Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Softball All-Atlantic Region First Team Selection where she advances to the All-America Ballot. She finished the regular season ranked second in sacrifice flies, sixth in RBIs, 21st in total bases and RBIs per game, 30th in slugging percentage and 40th in runs per game in the nation.

Claflin, finished the 2019 season 37-19 overall and a perfect 18-0 in the CIAA capturing the CIAA Southern Division Title. The Lady Panthers were the CIAA Tournament Runner-Ups in their first season in the conference.
