A Look Back on Claflin Volleyball 2019

With the postponement of the start of the fall sports seasons due to COVID-19, throughout the fall, the Claflin University athletics department will highlight accomplishments from the 2019-2020 seasons.

This week we focus on the Claflin University 2019 Lady Panthers volleyball team.  While the 2019 season did not end quite according to plan – a trip to the CIAA Post-season Tournament -- there were several highlights throughout the season for the Lady Panthers .

The 2019 rendition of the Claflin saw rising junior Sadaiya Edouard along with rising sophomore Erin Preston earn CIAA Post-Season Honors.  Edouard and Preston both earned All-CIAA Second Team honors.

Edouard, 5-9, middle hitter, was once named CIAA offensive player of the week. She finished the 2019 campaign with 69 kills, 79 digs, 61 total blocks, and 135 points.

Preston, (5-9, right side hitter, Atlanta, Ga.), came on strong at the end of the season.  She finished with 77 kills (1.05 k/s).  As a back-up setter she has to her credit 108 set assists along with 51 digs for 88.5 total points.

Preston and Drayton also earned CIAA All-Rookie Team honors in 2019.

"I believe we did very well considering we were a young squad consisting of mainly sophomores and freshmen," said head coach Chymaine Guinyard.  "Having to adapt to being a collegiate student-athlete, learning a new system and being a part of a historic and very competitive conference with great skill levels, is no easy task."

In addition to the post season honors, several players earned weekly honors throughout the year, including: Setter of the Week, Offensive Player of the Week, Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week which  "showed the players that their hard-work, passion and commitment did not go unnoticed." said coach Guinyard.
