A Look Back on Claflin Women’s Basketball 2019-2020

With the delay in the start of the 2020-21 athletics seasons due to COVID-19, throughout the fall, the Claflin University athletics department will highlight the 2019-2020 seasons accomplishments from its teams.
 
This week focus is on the Claflin University 2019-2020 women's basketball team.
 
The brightest spot all season long was the play of point guard Dionna Long. The rising junior point guard, who is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, earned three Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Defensive Player of the Week awards during the 19-20 campaign.  Long finished the season ranked 2nd in steals, 13th in scoring, 17th in assists and 18th in free-throw percentage in the CIAA.
 
"Dionna Long, for us, was the spark when we always needed one," head coach Revonda Whitley said.  "When she was off, we struggled greatly, so for this coming season, if she's healthy and able to return to play, we are expecting that same spark.  Her heart for the game is phenomenal and whenever she steps on the floor, she gives 110%. We will be ecstatic and blessed when she returns."
 
Another bright spot for the Lady Panthers was the lone senior Shakarri Mack.  Mack, who graduated with honors with a degree in Business Marketing with a concentration in Finance in May, was also visible in the CIAA, finishing ranked 9th in free-throw percentage and was a candidate for the Lowes Senior CLASS Award.
 
"I look forward to the incoming class of recruits, they will have a tremendous impact on our program," said Whitley.  "We have recruited a mix of freshmen and transfers and feel we have addressed scoring deficiencies at every position." 
 
Last season, the Lady Panthers finished the season ranked 5th in steals in the CIAA.
