A Look Back on Claflin Baseball 2020

Throughout the Fall 2020, the Claflin University athletics department has been highlighting the 2019-2020 seasons of its athletics teams.

This final focus is on the Claflin University 2020 baseball team.

After playing as an Independent during the 2019 season, the Panthers baseball team joined the Peach Belt Conference on July 1, 2019.

Prior to the cancellation of the 2020 baseball season due to the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Panthers hit some bumps in the road on the field, which is normal with any major transition.

"With entering a new conference as well as working through a new pitching staff, the Claflin Baseball team went through a year of transition in 2019," said Head Coach James Randall.

Despite the shortened season, the Panthers managed several successes. For starters, several members of the team participated in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Career Forum.

Rising senior Makai Holloway was named to the Peach Belt Conference Academic Team of Distinction.  Holloway also participated in NFI Internship with Nicholas Financial, Inc. (NFI).

Rising senior Steven Joyner was featured in Black College Nines HBCU Baseball's Top "No Fly" Zone which evaluated players by arm strength, fielding range, speed, and hitting for power and average.

"This year's team should fair better than last season," Randall said.  "We are looking forward to this season, as the team is built a little different.  We have a host of transfers along with a solid class of freshman and our top two offensive returners."
