Claflin Travels to Eckerd for Weekend Series

Orangeburg, S.C. -- The Claflin University baseball team will travel to St. Petersburg, Fla. for a three-game series this weekend against Eckerd College of the Sunshine State Conference.
 
The non-conference series gets underway Saturday (Feb. 17) with a double-header beginning at 1 p.m. The second game will start approximately 30 minutes after the completion of the opener. The series conclude Sunday (Feb. 18) at 12-noon.
 
All games will be played at the Turley Athletic Complex.
 
Claflin, 1-6 on the season, is coming off a 2-1 series loss to Virginia State University last weekend. In the series, the Panthers batted .350 with 35 hits, 25 runs scored and eight home runs. Harold Smith, Darrell Langston, Craig Hopkins and Chad Parker, all smashed two home runs apiece in the series.
 
For the season, Langston, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Player of the Week, leads Claflin in hitting at a .350 with 8 RBIs followed by Jonathan Parnell II at .300 and a team-high eight runs scored.
 
In the pitching department, Cleveland Westbrook has recorded the Panthers lone win on the mound.
 
Dillon Parker has a 3.00 ERA, the lowest on the team, followed by Alfie Carter with a 3.60 ERA.
 
Eckerd is 2-2 on the season with both of those victories coming against Shorter University (Ga.) 4-0 and 10-6 earlier in the month. The Tritons three-game series last week against Spring Hill College of the (SIAC) was cancelled due to inclement weather condition.
 
Eckerd is led offensively by Sam Cochrane with a batting averaging of .467 and Keith Leavitt Jr. at .333 for the season.
 
Nick Alonzo and Dillon McCollough are the leaders of the Tritons pitching staff.
 
After the series, Claflin will return to the confines of Historic Mirmow Field for four straight games, starting with a mid-week contest against Coker College on Feb. 21 followed by a three-game set against Bluefield State College Feb. 23-25.
