Claflin Volleyball Take Part in CIAA Roundup this Weekend

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Claflin University volleyball team will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. this weekend (Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 19-20) to take part in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-up #2.
 
Claflin will face three teams from the northern division over the two-day period on the campus of Winston-Salem State University.
 
Action gets underway on Saturday for the Lady Panthers at 12 noon against Virginia State University followed by two matches for Sunday, Lincoln University (PA) and Virginia Union University at 11 a.m. and 1 pm., respectively.
 
In the first round-up two weeks ago in Orangeburg, Claflin walked away with two victories as the Lady Panthers defeated Bowie State University 3-1 (25-12, 15-25, 25-12, 25-20) and Elizabeth City State University 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-21.
 
Claflin is 6-2 in round-up competition since joining the league last season.
 
The Lady Panthers will bring a 4-9 record into the event that includes 3-5 in league play. Claflin suffered its third straight setback the last time out, falling to Shaw University 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-9) on Wednesday (Oct. 16).
 
The Lady Panthers are led offensively by Jala Roberts at 113 kills this season that include seven matches with 10 or more digs. Taylor Drayton has contributed 102 kills with a season-high 15 against Livingstone College last week.
 
Léah Wellington leads the team in assist with 194 followed by Vianca Cólon Gonzalez at 105.  Trinity Fierce controls the backcourt on defense for Claflin with 142 digs with a season-high 20 coming against Paine College. Jala Jones is second on the team in digs with 114 and has a season-high 20 against Johnson C. Smith.
 
Sadaiya Edouard continues to lead the team in blocks and service aces at 21 and 38, respectively.
 
After the road trip, Claflin will return home for two matches next week, Converse College (Oct. 22) for Community Day and Livingstone (Oct. 26).
