Joseph Canty had a terrific career in Claflin men’s basketball. He played four seasons with the team and he finished his career with the Panthers. He set a school record for points in a single game with 67 points. He went on to lead the team to a conference championship in 1972. His playing career continued after college when he played for the New York Harlem Wizards.
The honors didn’t stop in college for Canty and they weren’t limited to basketball. He was honored for outstanding Leadership and Serve by the Upper Madison Avenue United Methodist Church in 1988. He served as the Capital Campaign Chairperson for Springfield Gardens UMC in 1988-89. He also earned Special Recognition for the Youth Mentoring Program by Duke Medical Center in 1995. He was also given the Exceptional Achievement Award given by the Boys and Girls Club of America in 1997
