Ruby Byrd had one of the most storied careers in the history of Claflin University basketball. From 1987 - 1991, she was a member of one of the most successful eras in the history of Claflin University women’s basketball.  The 1987-88 team reached the NAIA National Championship Finals. During her senior season, she led the Pantherettes to a 33-2 record and a #1 ranking and reached the NAIA semifinals. She became the first Claflin student-athlete to earn four NAIA All-American honors and she was named a Kodak All-American twice as well. She was named the District 6 Player of the Year in both 1990 and 1991. She was inducted into the EIAC Hall of Fame on May 18, 1995. She was also a star in track & field where she earned All-American honors as well.
