George Lee was a key figure in Claflin athletics both as a student-athlete and as an administrator. In 1972, he was a team captain and Most Valuable Player of the Panthers’ tennis team as a senior. Three years after his graduation, he returned as the head coach of the Panthers tennis team. He went on to serve as the Director of Athletics at Claflin during the 1985-86 season. During his time as Director of Athletics, he helped to establish the Garden City Basketball Classic with South Carolina State University. He also served as the softball coach at Claflin where he led the team to a second place finish in the EIAC during the 1985 season and an EIAC Championship during the 1986 season. He also went on to become the first and only African American to serve as the NAIA District 6 Eligibility Chair and he served as the chair until leaving South Carolina in 1997.
