Former Claflin women’s basketball coach Nelson Brownlee had a legendary career with the Claflin Lady Panthers. For 25 years, Browlee led the Pantherettes to becoming one of the premier women’s basketball teams in the nation.
 
During his time at the helm, the Pantherettes had a run of unprecedented success. He led the team to 17 Eastern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (EIAC) Championships, seven National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) District VI championships, two NAIA runners-up finishes, two NAIA semifinals appearances, a total of 12 National Tournament appearances, and six South Eastern Athletic Conference championships. Under his guidance, the Pantherettes produced numerous All-Americans and professional players. For his efforts, Brownlee was honored as a two-time Converse NAIA National Coach of the Year.
 
Over his 44-year coaching career, Brownlee won a total of 991 games, including claiming his 600th victory with a win over Morris College.
